When writing this album, the music inspired not only feelings but images and specific words.
We decided not to try and craft songs as much as let songs happen as they may. This direction
was probably most difficult for lyrics, as words tend to deliver a more concrete message. So,
to let words fall as they may, as depicted by musical inspiration is certainly abstract.
However, little by little words came, phrases developed. It was in these concrete words there
began to form a more interpretable story. The music inspiring feelings and images certainly
paints a picture and sets a mood. But to read specific words adds an eerie element to the
project. Because now we are expressing something completely abstract with no idea where the
moods and feelings are coming from, coupled with concrete messages where the origin is unknown.
Definitely interesting. But what does it all mean? We didn't know either to tell you the truth.
So, we just started looking stuff up. One of the specific lyrics was about Campbell's Bay and
that there were tracks there. Was Campbell's Bay a real place? Apparently, yes. But are there
train tracks or some kind of tracks there? Bear tracks even? Yes, there are train tracks there.
Well, that's interesting. I wonder if there are any more coincidences. Let's see what we can
find about Campbell's Bay. The only thing I can really find is that there was only one hanging
ever to take place in Campbell's Bay and that was Michael Bradley for killing five members of his
own family. That's kind of interesting because the lyrics mention a group of five. I can't
really find any more information about Campbell's Bay though. So, we called the Pontiac archives
in Shawville,QC and spoke to an elderly woman named Venetia Crawford. She sent some information
in the mail and ultimately connected a lot of dots for us. We decided on a whim to go out there
for a couple of days, meet Venetia, read up in the archives and look around. So, it was a road
trip to Quebec. Venetia had us in for dinner and told us everything. One striking point that we
capture Venetia discussing on the cd is that Michael Bradley's wife Emma had an affair with a
french lover, who was believed by many townspeople to have committed the murders and framed
Bradley. When Bradley was on trial, the french lover, as a witness told the court that the
Virgin Mary came to him in a vision explaining Bradley's guilt and exactly where the murder weapon
was hidden. It was 1935, and Campbell's Bay was a very religious french community and a claim
regarding information from the Virgin Mary held strong in the courts. It was, in fact, one of the
supporting evidential pillars for Bradley's conviction. Hearing this and seeing everything right
down to the grave of Father Dennis Harrington, the priest mentioned in the lyrics and the articles.
We decided to do a comparison of our story to the story of Michael Bradley. What better way to
understand our creative message or story than to compare it to an historical account. What better
historical account than the one we were naturally lead to find. This album is about taking the
abstract, the vague, the inspired and placing it over top of something concrete that we believe is
similar, in an attempt to better understand the abstract, the vague, the inspired, why we're
compelled to create it, and furthermore, why we are here.
